Chapter 12
Washington jogged down the orange tree lined street, passing several homes with screened-in porches, children serenely playing on the sidewalks and people grilling. Washington nodded at each one, something, he realized, he didn’t do in New York. In Orange Blossom he knew all his neighbors and most of the residents. He knew even if he hadn’t spent the first eighteen years of his life in Orange Blossom, he would still know everyone. Its residents always went out of their way to make newcomers welcome, embracing them with their friendliness.
Back in New York, in his twenty-floor high-rise with hundreds of apartments, he lived by the six-foot rule, he only knew his neighbors within a six-foot radius, which totaled three: Max, the twenty-five year-old, trust baby; Bianca, a Victoria Secret model; and Chuck, the retired advertising executive. His relationship with them was as casual and about as meaningful as a one-night stand. As he jogged along, he realized that he and Sam had only spoken twice this week and neither occasion was an emergency.
The realization hit him hard. From his end, phone calls and e-mails to his New York office had petered off to a few every couple of weeks, which was down from three or four calls a day and constant hourly monitoring of his e-mail.
He didn’t miss it, he felt lighter by not being tethered to New York. And as though someone had suddenly cut the cord and freeing him, he amped up his pace, rolls of perspiration poured down his bare chest and was absorbed by his running shorts’ elastic waistband. Because of his demanding job in New York he hadn’t run as much as he used to and he missed it. As he jogged through Orange Blossom, he emptied his mind of all worries and let the reins loose on his thoughts and let them roam wherever they wanted and unfortunately they decided on Blakely. Washington licked his lips, he wanted her; he wanted her with every inch of his soul. The need was so great, that he had dreamt about her, a sultry, erotic, XXX-rated dream that left him feeling very frustrated and unfulfilled.
Out of the corners of his eyes he saw a car slow then inch along matching his pace. If it was New York, he would’ve veered off in between buildings or down a side street to lose the suspicious looking vehicle, but since this was Orange Blossom, he knew without a doubt that the driver was someone he knew. He reluctantly peeked, he didn’t recognize the vehicle, a silver, convertible Mercedes.
The driver perched forward, giving him an eyeful. Camille.
Washington bit back a groan. “Hey Camille,” he called acknowledging her, but not slowing his pace, that didn’t deter Camille, she continued to keep up with him.
“Hey sexy,” Camille shouted. “So, you never called back to reschedule our date,” she said, then pouted seductively, a move designed to make any man her love slave, but Washington was immune to her tactics.
“I know and I’m sorry, renovating Jameson’s is taking up all my time.
